Day 14 - December 23 - Munich - Broken Camera!!

Munich - the heart of Bavaria and one of our favorite cities. It is the capital city of the state of Bavaria with a population around 1.5 million people. It is situated on the Isar River. We lived here briefly in 1975 in the Nymphenburg neighborhood, and we have such fond memories.

We booked our hotel with Hilton reward points. The Munich Hilton City is a very convenient location at Rosenheimer Platz near the Deutsche Museum and directly above a subway stop. Also walking distance to some favorite eating places in the Haidhausen neighborhood. The hotel is directly above a subway station, which makes it very convenient to get around.

Our room wasn't ready on arrival, and we waited in the executive lounge a little over an hour.

Here is Ron in the lounge as we were waiting for our room. Unfortunately, this last picture broke the camera. We keep getting a "lens error" message. So, hope we will be able to buy a new camera tomorrow. Stores will close at least by 2 PM and not re-open until December 26 or 27. Many are closed on Boxing Day (Dec. 26).

We went into the city to extend our rental car and do a few other errands. Walked from Karlsplatz (Stacchus) to Marienplatz - no stores were open, of course (Sunday). We stopped into the Augustinerkeller for a snack and beer. Ron finally got his gulash suppe, but (what are things coming to?) no bread served with it. Augustiner is one of the oldest breweries in Germany.

We walked through the main pedestrian street and had many "photo ops" we couldn't take advantage of!!! The Christmas Market is still in full swing, and everything is so picturesque.

Back in the hotel we visited with a couple from Philadelphia in the lounge.

Tomorrow we expect Pat and Mike quite early. They are taking the S-Bahn from the airport which is a direct shot to the hotel.
